Alfred Astles
Alfred Astles passed away on the 16th June 1910 age 51 after a bout of Pneumonia, he is interred in Swinton cemetery alongside his daughter Margaret Annie plus brother and sister in law George and Mary Reade.
Originally from Burslem, Staffordshire the Astle family moved to Chorlton - on - Medlock in the early 18890's, Alfred was a Carter.
Soon after arriving in Chorlton Alfred joined the recently formed United Carters' Association of England. A forerunner of the United Road Transport Union (URTU). By 1897 Alfred was the General Secretary of the association from 1897 until his death in 1910. He was a highly regarded officer and regularly spoke at union and association rallys, protests and meetings.
He was quite an active Labour supporter and for several years stood on the Board Of Guardians for Chorlton - On - Medlock and represented the Carters Association for many years at the Trade Union Congress.
Alfred was also a member of prestigious The Ancient Order Of Foresters. Formed in Rochdale 1834, is recognised as one of the oldest Friendly Societies in the country.
Alfred Tomlinson Astles was born 1859 in Astbury, Cheshire, the son of Joseph Astles a farmer and his wife Ann (Aldersea)
Alfred married Eliza Reade 1885 in Burslem where the couple lived until their move to Manchester in the early 1890's. Eliza remained in Manchester after Alfred passed away, her daughter Ethel remained living with her as a companion. Ethel died in 1943 and Eliza in 1945. Neither are buried in Swinton that I am aware of.
William Hickman Reade was the younger brother of Eliza, he and his wife Mary had moved to Swinton from Burslem for work, they lived for some years 147 Worsley Road. Perhaps it was William and Mary who suggested purchasing the family burial plot in Swinton Cemetery.
