Walter Jackson
Rank Private.
Service number 4459987.
Regiment Black Watch (Royal Highlanders).
Date of Death 1st May 1944.
Age 26.
Grave reference Sec. A. Grave 3162.
Walter Jackson was born 1918 in Swinton, the son of Albert Jackson (1) and Sarah Ellen Massey (2). He married Margaret Wilson Cooper (3) at St. Peters church Swinton in 1942. At the time of death Walter home address was 12 Woodgarth Drive, Swinton, the home of his wife's parents, his own mother was residing at 205 Worsley Road, Swinton.
His wife had visited him that day. He was walking back to base at around midnight, after taking his wife to the station for her journey back to Swinton. Walter was joined on his walk by a corporal, as they continued on their journey a Jeep carrying three American soldiers returning from a dance drove past and hit Walter throwing him into a ditch. He was taken to hospital and never regained consciousness and died about three hours later. His death was registered at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
He enlisted over three years ago and was for the previous three years "Batman" to his Battalion Captain. The captain wrote to the family offering his condolences and support and quoted Walter as being a good and trusted friend.
Prior to the war Walter was employed at Newton Street Post Office, Manchester, having earlier served time as a Telegraph Boy at Swinton.
(1) Albert Jackson married Sarah Ellen Massey in 1907. The couple had at least three children. There is no mention of Albert in any obituary for Walter so I assume he died before Walter.
(2) Sarah Ellen Massey was born in 1881 in Patricroft, she was still alive at the time of Walters death.
(3) Margaret Wilson Cooper was born 1919 in Salford the daughter of David Stott Cooper and Elizabeth Hardman, it appears that she remarried some time after Walters death.
