Harry Jones born in 1915 and married to Edna. At the time of death his home address was given as 180 Chorley Road Swinton. A fortnight earlier Harry had returned home on leave following the Arnhem Campaign. Killed in a road accident at Coningsby, Lincolnshire, he was struck by a civilian lorry.
Harry volunteered for military service at the outbreak of war. Employed by W. H. Cadman, Plasterer, Swinton. As a boy he attended St. Peters School, Swinton. He played for St. Stephens Rugby Club and also attended Swinton Unitarian Church.
9 Field Coy were also known as the "Shiny 9" and were part of the 1st Airborne Division. They are noted for their deployment in Operation Market Garden in the battle of Arnhem where they suffered heavy losses. Of the original company of 215 men of all ranks only 57 returned to the UK, the remainder either killed or captured.
