A document in his military record reads " Strong as a boy, occupation labourer heavy work, previously had been a stoker in the navy for 12 years.

A lot of the document is difficult to read. It seems he had pain close to his sternum and had a cough since May 1918, for years had suffered pain in the lumber region of his back, occasional vertigo and suffers from frequent headaches. A doctors examination suggests William had a enlarged heart and marked dilation. Hyper.......? Myocardium.
It seems highly likely he was admitted to Chelsea hospital 7 August 1918

William previously served in the Navy as a Fireman. Enlisted in the Navy 31 August 1896 and served 12 years, he then spent time working in a local coal mine.
