Patrick was born in Patricroft 1878 to Mathew and Alice Whelan one of at least 10 children. Enlisted in Manchester 6 June 1917 whilst living at 12 Worsley buildings, Pendlebury. His occupation, Boiler Stoker
Died in Reading War Hospital.
1911, 21 Horrocks Street, Pendlebury, employed as a Stoker in a local cotton mill.
married Agnes Violet Raftery. Children Alice 1907, William 1909
Two brothers, John Whelan born 1861 living 37 New Street, Pendlebury, William born 1867 living 5 Grosvenor Street, Pendlebury ( children of William were Mathew, William and Alice)
From his army medical records 1918. Section 5 Reading Hospital
March 9th. Disease Bronchitis. Both lungs full of Bronchi.
March 22nd. Transferred to Auxillary Hospital, Newbury district.
Negative T.B. test.
May 20th. Patient improving and now getting up daily although this was only for a few days throughout his hospital stay.
May 27th. Readmitted to Reading War hospital, condition not improving.
Weight 9st 6lbs. Acute bronchitis in both lungs, breathing distressed, heart rapid and dilated.
Patricks condition deteriorated further he passed away from heart failure brought about by his severe Bronchitis at 4.a.m. 16th June 1918
