born 16th July 1912 and baptised at St Peters church Swinton, son of Andrew and Maria Winnard. Siblings John, Jane(died in infancy), Dorothy and Florence.
69 Wellington Road. Joined the RAF two years before the onset of WWII.
He was a miner employed by Manchester Collieries.
Ernest was killed on active service whilst acting as a dispatch rider. On the day of his death he had been taking a bag of tools to an airbase "somewhere in England". This can be narrowed down to somewhere in the south, his base was Sundridge in Kent, his death was registered in the district of Ashford, Kent. The motorcycle he was riding hit the kerb by the road and he was thrown from the machine and died instantly.
His father was killed on military service in September 1915.Private 7th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. interred Abberville Communal Cemetery, France. His death came months after the birth of Florence.
